I’ve been continuously paying attention to the Cloud providers Blackout days. Especially to Amazon, almost every month, some strong news coming out of from these big Cloud providers that some transformers were damaged in parking lots which caused its datacenter to be down for few hours, and recently, on April 21, Amazon’s EC2 data center in Virginia crashed causing several websites including social networking websites down for several hours. This outage affected Amazon credibility and ad revenues. Also, it has again raised several questions on Cloud’s continuous availability.
No doubt, there are lots of other Cloud providers, like IBM, Google, Microsoft, and Cisco, but questions on Cloud’s reliability still surrounds. It would be very difficult to build confidence of small and medium size businesses after these kinds of outages.
We should understand that the Cloud is not a magic, it is one of the option for small and medium scale organizations to host their apps with Cloud providers without spending on building data center infrastructure. But we should also understand the risk involved in this.
